Race 1 - April 8, 2007

HAPPY EASTER!!

As you can see, some people were just so ecstatic, they could not contain themselves. Being relaxed is one thing, but at a race? And with the constant squeal of tires? He must have been up late coloring eggs ... or something.

Okay, some administrative stuff. Sorry, but this is the beginning of a new season, and there are things you should know. These are things outside of what is posted on the web site. So here goes:
  • If you are planning to come out to join us, and have never driven in a Solo II event before, please know that you're allowed an instructor with you in your car. Take advantage of it. You may think you know your car, but you don't know autocross. Remember the instructor will help you get better faster!

  • Walk the track. It's open before Heat 1, and before Heat 3. Use this time to work your way around. If you're not sure about a section, ask someone. This will give you a good idea of the track layout, so that your first run isn't wasted "feeling out" the course.

  • Be considerate of other people's belongings. Just because it's not yours does NOT give you the right to maim/mar/smash/take/steal/damage other people's property. See this cone? It's Curtis', and some inconsiderate person ran over it, didn't bother to tell anyone, and damaged the cone completely. The green is permanently gone - the black you see is the rubber underneath. If you know who did this, or if YOU did it, come forth and show your worth as a considerate human being instead of being a rude, worthless piece of rubbish.

  • Lastly, have fun. This is not F1, WRC where you can lose a drive by not doing well. The most you'll lose is some pride, some gas and some rubber. Big deal. Have fun! The cost of one event is far less than greens fees at say, Ko' Olina. Besides, where else can you legally get crazy in your car, drive it in a way not, ahem, suitable for the street, and not get caught? So, make some friends and have fun or else ......

Okay, one thing about the pit area and rubbish. You're not to use the Stadium rubbish cans. You're to use your own rubbish bags. Check this out, as it's a perfect example of not using the Stadium rubbish cans. This person used his own bags for his trash.

Please remember to throw away your own stuff. But be careful to only throw away the rubbish, and not too much elst. Otherwise ...

The day started early, with the first arrivals showing up before daybreak.

This crew started getting their rides ready and then started setting up the track. It was wet, but the rain was only a quick sprinkle, and did not bother us the rest of the day.

There were others arriving, some looking lost ...

While others were busily preparing the trailer area.

Meanwhile, the sun was trying to break through the clouds.

The gate folks were setting up. Apparently, there were some additional changes which caught Erin a bit off guard. Looks like she could not quite believe what she was reading. Either that, or she was trying to read. Does anyone know if she passed "Hooked on Phonics"?

But, there were suspicions that Jenn had something to do with this look. She was seen walking away from "the crime scene" with a what could be called a mischievious grin.

At the registration table, things were just getting started as the tech inspection area was being set up.

Amidst all of this, the Miata BoyZ were not hiding. Some were carrying a big stick, just in case someone took a, uh, well, closed attitude with their team name.

The track was pretty fast with a lot of slalom/lane change type of elements, a couple of hair pin turns and one large radius turn with a decreasing radius sweeper. We ran counter clockwise. Oh! For only the second time, we used a lighted board which will clearly show the driver his/her raw time. Drivers still need to listen to the announcer for any cone count or DNF call. Here's what the scoreboard looks like in action -- that's Curtis on his first run.

Let's get back to the track. From the start, it was fun, but a twisty course. Perfect for all of the Miata's that showed up.

From the start, after a quick left into a sharp right, you got on the gas. That would be the right hand pedal. Just kidding! Anyway, you headed up hill toward the "grandstand" through a channel of cones, and left into a slalom.

Then after the slalom a quick lane change into a short sweeper to the first of two hair pin turns. Get this right, and you could sling shot your way down the hill to the drain/banked curve. For those of you who remember, the best way through this was like taking turn 1 at the now defunct HRP.

After taking the drain/banked left you were lead (hopefully close to full throttle - unless you're driving an green Impala SS) to a semi-lane change into the second and really big right hand sweeper. Then, a quick right hander to the second of the two hair pins and a mad dash of 25 feet to the finish beam.

There, you were greeted or tormented with your time in bright, bold red letters that even I could read without my glasses! WOO HOO!!!

The turnout was good for an Easter Sunday, especially since we were not giving away chocolate. The reason for this is we didn't want it to melt and get on your car interiors, clothes, etc. That's our story, and we're standing firm. The turnout was pretty good! We had 109 people in total and we all had a good time. There was even plenty of time for fun runs!!

Speaking of fun runs. You must have a valid fun run card. These can be purchased - with a check made out to "SCCA Hawaii" and they cost $5.00 US. You can ONLY buy them at either morning or afternoon registration. You must also have teams of three - not two, not four. After Heat 4, if there is time, all teams must show up at the trailer table, and you'll surrender your "collateral" to Amy or Jenn at that time. After fun runs, you WILL stay to help clean up.
